This is such a good point, I think we don’t examine often enough what is considered ‘neutral’ in society, and now blatantly un-neutral everyday occurrences can be. Another ‘neutral’ phenomenon happening here, (or at least something this brought up in my mind) is how normal it is to distribute photos of nude women. It isn’t even surprising to find out that people in tech considered distributing Lena as another ‘neutral’ act, which only became problematic once female students are in the room. Thank you so much for writing this article! I feel like I learned a lot and have even more to think about with how Lena existed/exists in tech history and culture.
